About your heart

24hr Holter monitor

This is a monitor that records the ECG continuously for 24 hours. This may help in the diagnosis of palpitations, which do not occur all the time.

The device is usually fitted as an outpatient.  As with a standard ECG, small patches are placed on the chest. They are attached to wires leading to a portable recorder worn on a belt around the waist. Once the system has been set up, activities continue as usual, but the device must be kept dry during the recording. A diary of any symptoms is helpful to relate to any observed changes on the 24 hour ECG.
