Pacemaker

A pacemaker is usually used to speed up the heart if it is beating too slowly.

A pacemaker is a small device that is placed under the skin below the collar bone.  It is connected to the heart by small cables passed through a vein.  The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia.

The battery typically lasts for 10 years and then the pacemaker needs to be replaced.
