Smoking is a major risk factor for diseases affecting the heart, lungs, and cancers. Every effort should be made to stop.

You will find several sources of information to help stop smoking on our links page.

Smoking is one of the most important things you can do to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and lung cancer.  Smoking damages the body in many ways.  It can be exceedingly difficult to give up, but there are many such sources of support available. See contact: quit51@nhs.net

How smoking causes heart disease

  • Damages the cells which line the blood vessels, particularly those in the coronary arteries.
  • Increases activity in the nerves which controls blood vessels, raising the blood pressure.
  • Makes platelet blood cells more sticky and so likely to form blood clots.
